URINARY POLYOLS
BIOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS

Description:

This test provides quantitative analysis of four polyols (erythritol, xylitol, arabitol, and ribitol) in urine. Elevated levels of urinary polyols have been observed in inherited disorders of the pentose phosphate pathway. Deficiency of ribose-5-phosphate isomerase leads to a slowly progressive leukoencephalopathy (van der Knapp, et al. 1999. Ann Neurol 46:925-928). Deficiency of transaldolase has been observed in patient with liver failure and elevated urinary polyols (Verhoeven NM et al. 2001. Am J Hum Genet 68: 1086-1092). This test is performed by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy.
