OROTIC ACID AND OROTIDINE DETERMINATION
BIOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS

Description:

During periods of hyperammonemia the excess ammonia can result in excess carbamylphosphate synthesis in the mitochondria. The excess carbamylphosphate is then diverted into the synthesis of orotidine and orotic acid. These compounds are excreted in the urine. These compounds are quantified using high pressure liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry.

Specimen Requirements:

Any random urine is acceptable. No preservatives are required. Store the specimen frozen. Specimens may be stored for not more than 1 month. Ship frozen on dry ice.

Normal Range:

Orotic Acid: 0.3-2.82 mmol/mole Creatinine
Orotidine: 0.06-2.02 mmol/mole Creatinine
