Description:This protocol is designed to extract organic acids from urine for their analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The protocol is based on the preferential solubility of uncharged organic acids in organic solvents (ether, ethyl acetate) versus water. We provide a qualitative screen for organic acids as a routine service and offer quantitative analyses of specific organic acids upon request (see methylmalonic acid). Specimen Requirements:Random urine sample, 5-20 ml, without preservatives. Store the sample frozen and ship on dry ice. Specimens are stable for at least 14 days.
