METHYLMALONIC ACID, QUANTITATIVE
BIOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS

Description:

Methylmalonic acid is present in physiological fluids at very low concentrations under normal conditions. In disorders of vitamin B12 metabolism or primary deficiencies in methylmalonic acid metabolism the concentration of this metabolite becomes significantly elevated. This procedure determines the methylmalonic acid levels in plasma by using isotope dilution and gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy.

Specimen Requirements:

This assay is performed on plasma. 1-2 ml of blood drawn in a heparin containing tube (green top), separated as soon as possible and stored frozen.

Normal Range:

Plasma: Normal:0.07-0.27 mM, B12 Deficiency:0.27-200 mM

Turnaround Time:

8 days
